24 hours of policing in Nanaimo

On Wednesday July 26, 2023, the Nanaimo RCMP responded to 117 calls for service. Fifty percent of those calls fell into the category of theft, Assist Other Agencies, Suspicious person/vehicle, Unwanted person and Check Well-being.

The following provides a short summary from some of the above noted files.

Nanaimo file # 2023-25467

Sometime in the early morning hours, a clubhouse located in the 600 block of Park Ave was broken into, and taken was a Rockville RPG 15BT boom box stand up style speaker.

Nanaimo file # 2023-25534

At approximately 2 PM, officers responded to a report of an individual acting erratically and making alarming statements. When police arrived, the individual was brandishing a knife. Officers managed to de-escalate the situation, then apprehended the adult under the Mental Health Act. This person was  eventually escorted to the Nanaimo hospital for treatment.

At approximately 10 AM, officers responded to assist BCEHS in central Nanaimo with an adult man who had consumed LSD, was talking irrational and acting delusional. The officers assisted BCEHS with loading the individual into their waiting ambulance where he then was transported to the Nanaimo hospital for treatment.

At approximately 1 PM, officers responded to a report of a verbal domestic between a man and woman near Dianna Krall Plaza in downtown Nanaimo. When officers arrived, they spoke with an adult man of no fixed address, who said he was trying to clean the area up. A female with him was located and officers had no concerns with her safety. Both individuals were told to move along. After gathering up their affects, they did so.

 Around 2:30 PM, officers responded to a report of a man slumped over on a bench in the 300 block of Terminal Ave. BCEHS had already attended however the individual had refused medical aid. When officers arrived, the individual had left. Officers conducted a foot search of the immediate area but were unable to locate him.

Nanaimo file # 2023-25661

Around 4 PM, officers received a report of a suspicious person/vehicle near the curling Club on Wall St. Reports indicated the driver was driving erratically, and was suspected of being impaired by drugs/alcohol. Patrols were conducted and the driver and vehicle were located a short distance away. The driver, a woman in her 60’s, admitted to consuming cocaine earlier in the day. Based on her admission and physical symptoms displayed, the woman was issued with 24 hour drivers license suspension and her vehicle was impounded.

Nanaimo file # 2023-25553

Just before 11 PM, officers responded to the 100 block of Nicol St for a report of 2 woman running in and out of traffic. Police managed to locate one woman who appeared to be acting erratic. Officers formed the opinion that she was a risk to herself and also the public and arrested her for Causing a Disturbance. She was then lodged in cells for several hours until such time that she was deemed sober.

At approximately 11 PM, officers responded to assist BCEHS with an unruly intoxicated person, who was found passed out in the middle of the road in north Nanaimo. The attending officer was familiar with the individual and knew from previous dealings that he was too violent to be considered for the Sobering facility. By default, the man was arrested for being intoxicated in a Public Place, then transported to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment, where he was kept until sober.
